1. Start with the product and the customer
Before you choose a platform: who buys, why from you, and what do you earn per order after purchasing, shipping and fees? A webshop with a clear contribution margin and a clear target audience can live on a few visitors. A webshop without it can’t be saved by a nice theme.
2. Choose a platform
The most popular solutions in Denmark fall into three groups:
- Hosted platforms like Shopify and Danish alternatives like Shoporama and DanDomain Webshop: quick to get started with, fixed monthly subscription.
- WooCommerce on WordPress: flexible and with no platform subscription, but you handle hosting and updates.
- A webshop on a subscription with a developer: built and run for you at a fixed price.
3. Payments and shipping
Danish customers expect Dankort (the Danish debit card), Visa/Mastercard and MobilePay. Choose a payment provider that supports all three. For shipping, customers should be able to choose a parcel shop or home delivery, and the shipping price must be clear before they go to checkout — unexpected shipping costs are one of the biggest causes of abandoned carts.
4. Legal requirements
As a webshop selling to consumers, you need the following in place, among other things:
- Terms and conditions with company details and CVR number (the Danish business registration number).
- Information about the 14-day right of withdrawal and the 2-year right to complain about defects.
- A privacy policy and cookie consent before any tracking is set.
- Prices including VAT and all mandatory fees.
- VAT registration once sales exceed the DKK 50,000 threshold over 12 months.
5. Product pages that sell
Good photos from several angles, a description that answers the customer’s questions, and clear information about delivery and returns. Write your own product descriptions — the manufacturer’s copy appears on a hundred other webshops, and Google has no reason to show yours.
6. The first customers
Start with your own network, social media and an email list. Create a Google Merchant Center account so your products can appear for free in Google Shopping. Ask your first customers for reviews, and use them on your product pages.
