About the project
Bunker Atlas is a global platform dedicated to documenting and exploring military bunkers, shelters and fortifications. With more than 180,000 registered locations, the platform makes a massive historical and geographic dataset freely available through interactive maps, advanced search and individual site profiles.
I worked on the project from both the visual and the technical side: from developing the overall brand identity and design system to building the web experience itself and the structure behind the data. The challenge was to make huge amounts of data easy to explore without compromising on visual elegance or performance.
The platform is built as a custom solution in the Astro framework with a tailored backend and a database architecture optimized for geodata. On top of that, I developed AI models and algorithms for cleaning and enriching the data, plus community features where users can contribute corrections, photos and historical sources.
